"Congratulations" Track Review

Whether you are an avid fan of the friends-to-lovers romance genre or have experienced the phenomenon outside the pages of a book, the mix of fear and uncertainty between two people becoming more than friends is an all too familiar feeling. In their new song, “Congratulations”, the queer indie pop duo, Boyish, tackles this familiar trope but with a revisionist history spin –after the relationship has fallen apart.

The band elaborates, “‘Congratulations’ is about falling for someone who you are close to. It’s the moment when you cross the line between friends and something more and the fear that once you cross that line there’s no going back. It’s written from the present day after things have fallen apart but reflects back to the moment when you become more than just friends.”

“Congratulations” leans into the early 90’s dream pop era with soft distorted guitar melodies offered by guitarist, Claire Altendahl, and the velvety vocals of India Shore. The vulnerability of Shore’s vocals mixed with Altendal’s dream-like guitar riffs provides the perfect contrast to the steady drums throughout the song, which encapsulates the bittersweet narrative the duo weaves in their lyrics. The sound is lush, and together, the duo creates a place of solace as this chapter of young love comes to a close.

Their new EP, My Friend Mica, releasing on May 6th, is sure to offer even more earnest storytelling, rich vocals, and fuzzy yet edgy guitar riffs. You can also find them in Columbus at The Basement on May 10th where they will be opening for Remo Drive.
