His halftime show was brimming with love, culture, and empathy, featuring not only a real engagement, but also a real wedding complete with a cake cutting. As someone who became a fan of Bad Bunny this year due to his Grammy winning album Debí Tirar Más Fotos (DtMF), I was counting down the minutes until he took the field.

To begin the show, Bad Bunny opened with “TiTí Me Preguntó”, a hit that skyrocketed him even further into mainstream culture. Farmers lined the aisles of the sugarcane as Bad Bunny strolled through, a representation of the plant’s significant role in the economy of Puerto Rico. Throughout the show, Bad Bunny showcased the unique culture of Puerto Rico—signaling a desire for Puerto Rican independence throughout the performance.

In the same vein, the largest portion of Bad Bunny’s set was a replica of a traditional Puerto Rican house. He stood atop this structure, singing “VOY A LLeVARTE A PA PR,” a song about taking a significant other from Miami to Puerto Rico to show her true love and how to dance. It is almost as if Bad Bunny is inviting this woman to his house, but the structure of the house was simply a metaphor for the island that Bad Bunny affectionately refers to as his neighborhood.

Suddenly, the roof collapsed under Bad Bunny, and he stumbled out of the house to a crowd dancing to the popular club track “Gasolina” by Daddy Yankee, which effortlessly transitioned into one of Bad Bunny’s own, “EoO.” The mashup was flawless, so to any DJs in AROUSE, please take notes.

Piercing through all of the chaos, string instruments began to play “Monaco.” Bad Bunny, once again surrounded by sugarcane, processed through while speaking directly to the camera about internal value and self-esteem. Translated, his speech was:

“My name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, and if I’m here today at Super Bowl 60, it’s because I never, ever stopped believing in myself. You should also believe in yourself. You’re worth more than you think. Trust me.”

Then, the camera panned over to the real wedding. According to the couple, they had invited Bad Bunny to their wedding, and not only did he actually respond, but he invited them to get married as part of his halftime show. After their kiss, the crowd parted to reveal Lady Gaga in the colors of the Puerto Rican independence flag, dancing meringue and belting her song “Die With A Smile” in a syncopated style. Bad Bunny climbed onto the stage, offered Lady Gaga his hand, and began his masterpiece “BAILE INoLVIDABLE,” which means unforgettable dance in English. “BAILE INoLVIDABLE” is my personal favorite song off DtMF, and as I gazed in awe at my television, I could not help but be envious of the newlyweds, for their first dance with definitely anything but forgettable. During this celebration of love, Bad Bunny shook awake a boy in a suit sleeping on two chairs, a nod to the Latino children that fall asleep at parties, for the parties never end.

Walking backwards off a platform, Bad Bunny was caught by his dancers for “NUEVAYoL.” Bad Bunny also spotlighted a real business during his show: Toñita’s Caribbean Social Club. Toñita opened her club back in 1974 in New York City, and has since become a symbol for Latino spirit in the United States. Her appearance in the show not only was heartwarming as we saw her hand a shot of rum to the singer, but also extremely powerful symbolism. Toñita is living proof of Latino culture persisting, despite all that has tried to hinder the spirit.

The scene once again transitions, this time to Bad Bunny’s Grammy acceptance speech on a small tv, being watched by a young Latino boy. The real Bad Bunny, Grammy in hand, approaches the child and hands the award to him. Watching this scene, it is evident that the prize the child was handed was Bad Bunny’s real Grammy, for he struggled to hold it up due to the weight of the metal. This moment was his way of passing the torch of keeping the Latino spirit alive in the United States to the younger generation.

On top of Lady Gaga’s surprise cameo, Ricky Martin came into view, surrounded by sugarcane, singing “LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii” a song pushing for Puerto Rican independence. The song expresses the fear that many Puerto Ricans hold that the United States will solve the ambiguity of colonization by granting the island statehood. However, as seen by the history of Hawaii, the United States does not allow sovereign nations to remain free, and instead forces them to become a state. Ricky Martin, a symbol for the older generations, begged the older viewers to remember the process of capture, control, and colonization that was despicably done to Hawaii and pleaded not to let this injustice happen to Puerto Rico.

Symbolism shined throughout his entire set, but his critique of the government’s treatment of Puerto Rico caught me attention on the first watch. During his song “El Apagón,” Bad Bunny joined dancing lineman on power lines, a direct call out of the power outages faced by Puerto Rico. Although a United States Territory, following devastating hurricanes like Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Fiona, Puerto Rico faced power outages that lasted months, depriving over 80% of these American citizens of electricity. Despite efforts from Congress since 2022 to provide funds for stable electricity for the island, Trump has cancelled the vast majority of this necessary project. By choosing to play “El Apagón,” a song title that translates to “power outage,” Bad Bunny asserted not only that the United States mistreats Puerto Rico, but also calls for their independence by waving the original, light blue, flag of Puerto Rico.

Leading a parade of flags, Bad Bunny marched out of the stadium. Speaking English for the first time this entire performance, he declared “God Bless America” so that all English viewers could understand it. Then, he proceeded to announce the names of every country in North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean of course, for America is not the United States, but it includes the entire Western Hemisphere. Holding up a football that says “Together, We Are America,” Bad Bunny shouts “¡Seguimos aqui!,” or “we are still here,” to let the colonizers of then and the ICE agents of now know that no matter what they try to do, the spirit and culture of Latin America will persist, just as it has for the last five centuries.

As a registered nerd, I could not help but to see the structure of his performance from a psychological lens. Role-taking is a psychological technique that forces a majority to imagine a day as a minority. Although this seems simple, this technique has been proven to decrease stigma surrounding heavily-discriminated against groups. Bad Bunny uses role-taking to guide the audience through life in Puerto Rico and New York City for Latinx people. By doing so, he allowed non-Latinx viewers to admire the differences in culture while also finding the commonalities amongst all of us. His performance truly goes to show that every person is equal, regardless of imaginary borders, skin color, or language, for we all love the same way.

On February 8th, 2026, over 125 million viewers of the Super Bowl were taken on a tour of Latino culture, led by Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny.
