When I first heard Psychedelic Porn Crumpets\u2019 Found God in a Tomato<\/em> at the age of fifteen, I thought it was the most enlightened, intellectual, mysterious song to grace mankind, and decided I had found the sound of true adulthood. Last Saturday, I was fortunate enough to finally watch the band lay down a killer performance of this song, as well as fourteen other modern psych-rock classics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before this scorcher set, I had the opportunity to sit down for a chat with Porn Crumpets\u2019 Jack McEwan (vocals, guitar, production) and Chris Young (guitar, keys) about their lucky seventh album: Carpe Diem, Moonman<\/em>, doppelgangers, and the love of the game, as well as a bit of psychedelics, porn, and even crumpets! The entire conversation is transcribed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I met up with the band at The Newport Music Hall as they were setting up for the last show of their North American tour with supporting act, Grocery Bag. My conversation with the Crumpets came just three days after the release of Carpe Diem, Moonman<\/em>\u2014my favorite release from 2025 thus far. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hailing from Perth, Western Australia, the Porn Crumpets have been on a steady rise since their formation in 2014, gaining international renown for their expansive psych rock records and <\/p>\n\n\n\n

live shows, which additionally feature Danny Caddy on drum kit, Luke Parish on guitar, and Jamie Reynolds on bass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During my conversation, Jack McEwan and Chris Young were warm and friendly, and the whole team were very down-to-earth. If you\u2019ve never had a first-hand encounter with a Porn Crumpet, I highly recommend making the effort when they come to a city near you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their live setlist draws more from the energetic-to-heavy side of the Crumpets\u2019 discography. This experience differs from the stylistic range of songs offered within the albums, which also feature an array of soft, melodic, dreamy songs. However, after experiencing the ecstatic kind of action featured on songs such as March on for Pax Romana, (I\u2019m a Kadaver) Alakazam, Cornflake, <\/em>and Bill\u2019s Mandolin<\/em>, it\u2019s easy for the concert-goer to understand the logic behind the song selection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fan experience at the set was wonderful, and there was a definite sense of community present. My mom\u2019s desired Mother\u2019s Day present was a ticket to the show, and we attended together. We both tend to stay outside of wilder male dominated moshes, but there was no need to worry\u2014three male strangers spontaneously formed a barrier around us. I had found chivalry at a Porn Crumpets show. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I anticipated a great show, but no string of words could have prepared me for the reality. The band was tight and visibly into the music, and the crowd responded: heads were banging, the pit was moshing, the place was rocking. Following the end of the show, an awestruck fan fist-bumped his fellow porn stars farewell as we left, individually celebrating what had been a shared spiritual experience. All those with eyes and ears may accurately claim that he was on something, but he was also onto something, and he was one of the realest among us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Granted, the Crumpets are already my cup of tea, but this show is for more than just the high, the horny, and the hungry among us: as an estimated 100% of people who like to have fun would have a good time at a Psychedelic Porn Crumpets show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

      For those who yearn to see: This conversation takes place in The Newport green room. Jack McEwan and Chris Young sit on a couch, with Jack on the left and Chris on the right. I am on a chair angled toward the couch near Chris\u2019 side and a table, where I put my recording device (trusty iPhone 12).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It has now been 3 days since the release of your 7th album, <\/strong>Carpe, Diem Moonman<\/em><\/strong>. What has been new since <\/strong>Fronzoli<\/em><\/strong>, both sonically, maybe process-wise, and personally if you’re comfortable sharing that affected the writing? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I\u2019d say a lot of things. It was the longest time or gap that we had since Covid writing a record, and I think Night Gnomes <\/em>was the record that we managed to make good time over. I was like, sort of in between ideas, and I think it was more a compilation thing, like Night Gnomes<\/em>. But Fronzoli <\/em>felt like kind of a good, structured record without the time frame. So I think, even though there was a time frame on Carpe Diem[, Moonman]<\/em>, we picked the best songs, everyone came out \u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      We have like 12, 13 to have a sift through. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, tunes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, to make it a cohesive album. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u2014And pick them to do the drums for. But the actual ideas on them, I feel like they were way stronger than maybe on other releases. I read somewhere that someone was like, \u2018sounds like High Visceral Pt. 3\u2019 which was like \u2018Yeahhh!\u2019 That\u2019s kind of a good analogy. But for us, I don\u2019t know, it\u2019s only like trying to do something new. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      We went and watched Animals as Leaders on a boat in \u2013 where was that, Haddington?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Somewhere between Florida and Dominican Republic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Oh, cool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah. For Coheed and Cambria, they did, like, a cruise tour. So we went on that, watched Animals as Leaders, it was like, every day pretty much\u2014 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, yeah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      We\u2019d literally wait there, and got schooled in the ability of what I thought guitar work was, so I kind of went back. And then even just talking about doing it with Meshuggah. Some bands\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, I think this album\u2019s leaning into, like heavier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      But it\u2019s even got some nicer parts as well\u2014 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, oh yeah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u2014 like Concrete & Cola <\/em>is one of the most beautiful things, which is really nice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I think it\u2019s very balanced. The hummingbird one [referring to As the Hummingbird Hovers<\/em>] \u2013that one is very lovely.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      You like that tune? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, I really do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That’s good! Yeah, they all felt so nice. And I think they work really well with the record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Actually, I was talking to Joey though \u2013 the guy who mixed the album. I was asking him after a time spent away from hearing the album, to like hearing it within the last week or whatever before release, and he was saying Hummingbird <\/em>\u2013 he likes the weird ones usually on the album \u2014 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u2014that most people won\u2019t like, and they turn out to be some of the favorites. So he said Hummingbird was a solid fav piece to mix. That one sounds like \u2013 it\u2019s own standalone thing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, yeah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Mm hmm, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It\u2019s crisp, it\u2019s good, it\u2019s good. And we worked with Ted Jensen, who was like \u2013 he\u2019s done stuff with hundreds of acts, I can\u2019t even name them. He did the first Eagles album <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Oh cool! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Like mastering, and then he\u2019s done Bring me to the Horizon, I think he\u2019s done Rihanna and like \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      *Laughter <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Going from Eagles to Bring me to the Horizon\u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That\u2019s interesting though! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah I know, he\u2019s massive! So Joey who we mix with, he usually masters now, but we were sort of like \u2018How do we kind of level this up?\u2019 And he was like \u2018If you wanted to, if you want you can turn your voice over to this guy\u201d and he turned it around in a day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Wow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      So that allows us to listen to the single first, [March on for] Pax Romana<\/em>, with Ted and we\u2019re like \u2018Holy shit! Like that sounds huge,\u2019 so we kind of kept with him for the record. And I think it\u2019s nice. Feels like now we\u2019re obviously getting rid of all those bad bedroom habits which, obviously, those are going to stick when we record it ourselves. But I\u2019m trying to fine tune making it sound as good as possible before giving it to Joey. And we spent a long time tweaking that album, so I think it\u2019s good. I\u2019m actually really happy with it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, you\u2019re doing a great job, I will say. I loved it, my family and friends loved it, so\u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      You played it to your family? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I didn\u2019t play it, I come from a music family. So my mom\u00a0actually asked for a ticket to this show for Mother\u2019s Day\u2013\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      No way! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Oh we\u2019ll put her on the door <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      100%! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Really? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah yeah yeah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Oh my gosh, she\u2019s going to be thrilled for that! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I got her a ticket! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I did. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Well bring whoever you want then, we\u2019ll check whoever you want at the door. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Oh my God, I have a twin sister and I will try to get her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah? Bring ’em down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That\u2019s spectacular, but my family do really like this general type of music. My mom likes Pond a lot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, I know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The name originally, she was like \u2018I don’t know,\u2019 but then I played a bit and she was like, \u2018this is actually amazing,\u2019 so\u2014 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah I think the name puts a lot of people off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It\u2019s a hard one to search for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, but the music speaks for itself, and it sticks in your head. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Cool. Thank you very much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Do you still get nervous before announcing a big release, or even before concerts?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I – yeah, there is a nervousness where it\u2019s like, it’s no longer yours. I think I did it for another project as well, where it\u2019s like, I\u2019ve listened to the songs for three or four years, and when it\u2019s out, it\u2019s like, then you want to change things. I did it with Fronzoli<\/em>, and you kind of convince yourself that it\u2019s good, do you know what I mean? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      You\u2019ve got to show as many people as possible before you release something. I remember all of us listening to it. I think having confirmation, probably for the first time in a while with this record \u2014 I showed everyone that I knew, and you were showing people, and even just the band having input to be like \u2018that\u2019s a pretty strong record\u2019 to kind of reaffirm it before it was released. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I felt more confident with the Carpe Diem, Moonman <\/em>than I have with other records when I\u2019m like \u2018Ah, I don\u2019t know what people are going to think or\u2013 because I suppose we\u2019re doing it all independently. So like, we\u2019re only one bad album from literally going bankrupt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      *Laughter \u2014 <\/em>Don\u2019t say that! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      But it is, though! It feels like we need every record to get better than the last one so that we can actually keep going forward. There\u2019s no label there to be like \u2018ah that\u2019s alright, have another go.\u2019 Sort of like, that\u2019s where the band\u2019s at. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Well, to get the opinion of the public that it might be High Visceral, pt. 3<\/em>, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It\u2019s like a big pat on the back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It was nice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Pretty cool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      And I listened to it when it came out. I was like \u2018it\u2019s too quiet!\u2019 or this or something, but I had nothing of fault with the actual songs or music. I listened to it, I suppose, as a person trying to take myself out of it, which is impossible to do. So you\u2019re obviously going to know what\u2019s going to know, what sound. But I was trying to learn what\u2019s on the next one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      So I\u2019m like alright, needs more amp for certain tones and the needs of some of this guitar\u2019s tone, or shimmer and drumkit to maybe prevail on the heavier songs, and a lot of compression on the kit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah (laughing) <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      But we left it really clean and raw, which I think instead of doing, em\u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Lots of triggers <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, lots of stuff on the kit to make it sound more punchy, and sometimes they flatten themselves. It\u2019s like that kit is just Danny raw kit and everything\u2019s sort of on top, which is probably a no-no these days in rock music. Do you know what I mean? It\u2019s so tampered with afterwards\u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      In post-production. So to hear\u2013 it kind of goes back to the 70\u2019s records where it was just completely raw tone. But I\u2019ve got to get away from the computer, need to work more analog. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, there\u2019s a good balance of both, how I find it. And I think that\u2019s the good thing about recording from home as well: you’re learning each record, and hopefully getting better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Now actually I have a question that I was going to ask a little bit later down, but I\u2019ll ask it now. I<\/strong> <\/strong>feel like you are kind of well-known for your production and\u2013<\/strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Are we?? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Hehe <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That\u2019s what I\u2019ve seen commented \u2013 I really like your production. Maybe that\u2019s just like, for me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That\u2019s mad, ok cool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I think you have great production. Anyway, and a really nice tone also. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      You get free tickets \u2013 for life. That makes you a\u2014 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Free tickets for life?! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      *Laughter <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Don\u2019t tempt me with a good time! Okay, so I\u2019m eager to see how this translates live. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, I think live is ten times better to be fair. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, it\u2019s sounding \u2014 Some of the gigs of this tour, I reckon with [March on for] Pax Romana <\/em>and [Another] Reincarnation<\/em>, we go to play it, and we\u2019ve finished playing and it\u2019s like \u2018that was enormous.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It\u2019s heaps of fun, it sounds justifiable toward the record, like giving justice. Because it\u2019s so large in the headphones, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      And then, you want to at least scratch the surface of where it sounds on the record, so I think we\u2019ve got it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      We have this strange sort of\u2014 like, the band itself is filled with just amazing players. Like Danny, which is a drum teacher at a university or has been, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Oh cool! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Luke is doing his own thing with his production. Chris went and studied, and Jamie, he produces as well. And all of us have got this vibe that we bring to the live show, that I suppose in the recording, it\u2019s not like we\u2019ve worked on the song and recorded it the way we\u2019re hearing the song. It\u2019s like, the song is recorded\u2014 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u2014 and then we kind of learn it to play it live\u2014 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u2013 So it\u2019s almost doing it backwards, but it seems to link. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It\u2019s almost like it\u2019s own beast, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u2014 the live band. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, and everyone sort of adds like a cool \u2013 But I\u2019d love to go back into a studio and re-record some of the songs <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Do a whole album from the back-end, a live album? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah! It would be cool to have it be band-interpreted and work on the tone or whatever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, yeah.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      So, it just adds another element, especially when you see people and they’re just like \u2018ahh, that was way heavier than I expected\u2019 all the time. The bad thing though is that we miss out on a lot of the prettier songs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Because you\u2019d need a lot of strings, and bits and pieces <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, the crowd at the shows seem to really want to up the anti; if the last song was here, then they keep on\u2013 more moshing, more intensity. And then we\u2019re like, it\u2019s rude to bring it down now for them, play like November <\/em>or something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      We want people to keep ascending until the end of the show. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      *Starts to speak* <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      *Starts to interrupt* <\/em>\u2013 oh sorry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Nah you\u2019re alright, carry on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      No I\u2019m \u2013 I don\u2019t want to like, take too much time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Nah you\u2019re good. All we\u2019ve got to do is sound check, and the longer we\u2019re doing this, the less time \u2013 so keep going. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Ok, I\u2019ll keep that in mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I\u2019ve also seen some really cool pictures and footage of you crowd surfing. There have been some<\/strong> <\/strong>recent headlines of artists literally flopping when attempting a crowd surfing, so I had to ask you,<\/strong> <\/strong>what is the Porn Crumpets\u2019 methodology. How did you master it, were you born with it?<\/strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Do you? I don\u2019t \u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I think I\u2019ve done it like three or four times\u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Maybe I\u2019ve just seen all that footage? Like\u2014 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, like there was a \u2013 we think that there\u2019s a lot of doppelgangers that come to our shows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      *Laughter <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Is it just people crowd surfing?? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      There\u2019s lots Jack McEwans that come to the show. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah it\u2019s amazing. Like, everyone sort of looks the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I think maybe it sort of attracts people that \u2013 I don\u2019t know, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      And we saw a Chris Young there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, we were all\u2014 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      *Laughter <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Everyone\u2019s got their own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That\u2019s crazy! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I think it\u2019s coming to a different country, playing, maybe you\u2019re subconsciously looking for peoples\u2019 faces in the crowd that you recognize, or \u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah. But you\u2019re a twin, so you must get it a lot when it\u2019s like \u2018I think I\u2019ve seen you before.\u2019 When, you know twins, someone looks exactly like you and you go \u2018Oh my God!\u2019 but it happens week-in week-out strangely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      But what about the crowd surf? That was the question. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, for what\u2019s the methodology to get into the crowd, or how\u2014 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah. If it\u2019s not something that you do very much, how do you assess the situation? What\u2019s going through your mind? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I remember that I did one that was really delicate. I had to get someone to lift my legs and just didn\u2019t want to hurt anyone.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah yeah, you do it very gingerly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      We\u2019re all butterflies pretending to be musicians\u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Also, I think I worry about getting back to stage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Do I just end up at the front door? Like\u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I think it\u2019s because we\u2019re all playing guitar as needed, there\u2019s not really a resting that any of us have. So as soon as any of us go crowd surfing, the song drops dramatically. So it\u2019s a tough time to do it. But, I don\u2019t know. People seem to enjoy it. I\u2019ll let them do the crowd surfing and we\u2019ll stick to the music. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Ok, that\u2019s interesting. I have seen for sure\u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I definitely did it, I think it was New York, but I just gingerly went in, tough one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      You said on Weird World Awoke that all of your idols are dead. And you said Lemmie and Ozzie<\/strong> <\/strong>referring to Lemmie Kilmister of Motorhead and Ozzie Ozzbourne, who isn\u2019t dead but has seen<\/strong> <\/strong>better days.<\/strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That was the next lyric!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      *Laughter <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeah, right? Other than them, who are some of your dead, living, and transcendent idols? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Oh my God. I mean, loads. Half the Beatles, George Harrison, like David Bowie, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Yeahhh. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for me, I\u2019d love to get up to 20 albums and it be like \u2018Oh my God!\u2019 But it\u2019s actually moving, it\u2019s getting better.
